‘Game of Thrones’ author wants to kill you

“Game of Thrones” author George R.R. Martin is offering just that chance to help raise money for the Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary and the Food Depot in Sante Fe, New Mexico. Fans who visit his page on celebrity fundraising site Prizeo can make a donation and be entered to win a trip for two to New Mexico where they’ll ride a helicopter tour the Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary with Martin.

Donation levels range from $10 to $20,000 and the larger to gift the more opportunity there is to receive goodies. For example, $100 gets a donor a campaign T-shirt and a thank you video. $4,500 could yield a script of the first ever episode signed by the cast and crew and $7,500 snags a pair of tickets to the Season 5 premiere of the “Game of Thrones” television series.

But the biggest prize goes to the first fans with deep pockets to ante up.

For $20,000, one male and one female character will be named after the donor in a future novel with the author promising the character will “certainly meet a grisly death.”

If you have read his books or watched the show, you know he means it.

Actor Tracy Morgan in intensive care

Morgan’s condition was not expected to change Saturday, publicist Lewis Kay said. “His family is now with him and he is receiving excellent care.”

The former “Saturday Night Live” cast member and “30 Rock” star was riding in a limo bus when the accident occurred in Mercer County, said Sgt. Gregory Williams of New Jersey State Police.

The limo bus overturned at the New Jersey Turnpike in Robbinsville, he said.

“The limo bus is the only vehicle that overturned,” Williams said. “Looks like one of the tractor-trailers may have rear-ended that limo bus, but that’s preliminary at this time.”

Williams said he does not believe alcohol played a role in the accident, but that is under investigation.

In addition to the bus, the wreck involved two tractor-trailers and an SUV, he said.

“Shocked to wake up and read that @RealTracyMorgan is injured. Love to Tracy and wishing him strength,” former SNL cast member Rachel Dratch said via Twitter.

One person was killed and seven others hospitalized with injuries, authorities said.

Police identified the man who was killed as James McNair, 63, of Peekskill, New York. McNair was a passenger in the limo bus

Jennifer Lopez, Casper Smart Split After Two and a Half Years Together

Looks like Jennifer Lopez and Casper Smart’s “luh” story is over. The “I Luh Ya Papi” singer and her backup dancer-turned-choreographer beau have split after two and a half years of dating, a source close to Lopez confirms to Us Weekly.

“It has actually been an amicable process that started a few months ago,” the J.Lo insider says. “It wasn’t an easy decision, but they decided to stay friends…Their relationship couldn’t work with the distance. He started trying to establish his own life and career, and she is so focused on hers, and they just couldn’t be all about each other anymore.”

The source adds that Lopez is “doing fine.” It helps, the insider says, that “she’s so focused on promoting the album. They are both in a good place now.”

Lopez, 44, and Smart, 27, were first linked as a couple back in November 2011, just four months after the American Idol judge split from her third ex-husband, Marc Anthony, with whom she shares twins Max and Emme, 6. Since then, Smart has been a fixture at the star’s side, accompanying her to tapings and red carpets all over the world, and on family vacations with her kids.

Speaking about their relationship in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar in January 2013, Lopez gushed that her much younger beau was her best friend. “I can tell him everything, when I’m feeling down, when I’m feeling good,” she shared. “He gives moral support, endless love and support.”

In recent weeks, however, the duo faced rumors that Smart had cheated on Lopez with a transgender model he reportedly met online. Gossip site The Dirty claimed to have evidence that he had been exchanging photos and messages with the model via Instagram. There were rumors about a second transgender model, too. A source close to the couple told Us Weekly, however, that the story was “100 percent not true.”

“The scandal had nothing to do with it,” the first insider tells Us. “He insists none of that is true and she believes him.”

In any case, Lopez isn’t likely to stay single for long. In an interview earlier this year, the singer-actress admitted she’s “one of those people who does not like to be alone.” She also said that despite the problems she’s faced in her romantic life, she hasn’t ruled out the possibility of walking down the aisle a fourth time. (Prior to Anthony, she was wed to Cris Judd and Ojani Noa; she was also engaged to Ben Affleck.)

“I always believed in that institution,” she explained during a panel for American Idol. “My parents were married for a very long time, for 35 years. I believe in it…I’ve had my challenges, but at the same time, I believe in love. That’s the main thing.”

This Dad Pummeled An 11-Year-Old Kid For Bullying His 9-Year-Old Autistic Son

A furious father escorted his 9-year-old autistic son onto a school bus late last week and proceeded to beat up an 11-year-old kid who had allegedly been bullying the boy.

The incident occurred on Friday morning in the Bay Area suburb of Richmond, Calif., reports CBS San Francisco.

Police say the assailant, Burnis Hurd got on the bus with his son. Then, his son identified the boy who had been bullying him.

“The father grabbed the 11-year old by the hair, pulled hard and raised the child out of his seat, then shoved him on the side of the bus where the window meets the wall,” Richmond Police Lt. Mark Gagan told CBS San Francisco.

Police say Hurd, 44, also warned that he would kill the 11-year-old boy and also threatened some other kids on the bus for good measure.

The melee was not captured on videotape and the bus driver didn’t get involved. In fact, the bus driver never even bothered to report the incident. Instead, the 11-year-old kid informed the principal at Wilson Elementary School in Richmond, where both children are enrolled in a special education program.

The alleged bully ended up with a cheek abrasion and a gashed earlobe.

Hurd ended up in jail. He has been charged with child abuse and bodily injury to a child. As on Monday, he remained in jail pending a $50,000 bond.

The 11-year-old boy’s aunt and guardian, Shanika Moses, said she wants the mad dad “prosecuted to the fullest,” according to CBS.

Hurd might have fared infinitesimally better several hours down the road in the Los Angeles suburb of Carson City, where the city council narrowly rejected an ordinance that would have made bullying by children as young as 5-years-old a crime punishable by misdemeanor charges and fines of $100.

The ordinance, which went down by a single vote, would have prohibited everyone over the age of five from making another person feel “terrorized, frightened, intimidated, threatened, harassed or molested.”

Chris Brown: ‘The Community Service Isn’t a Problem Anymore’

Chris Brown has apparently had an attitude adjustment.

After an L.A. judge ordered him on August 16 to complete an additional 1,000 hours of community service, Brown didn’t take the news very well — to say the least. Last Thursday, he went on a Twitter tirade: “N–ga done 6 months community service wit police and the DA racist ass crying to the judge that I didn’t do it. F–k the SYSTEM!”

On Monday, four days after his angry posts, 24-year-old Brown had a more mature reaction to the matter.

“I’m truly happy to have my fans and life. Even wit the bs,” the “Turn Up the Music” singer wrote. “Can’t make a leader.. They have to be chosen by the people. #iju love ….”

He added, “The community service isn’t a problem anymore. Ill do what ever duty I need too to fulfill my requirements as a man and a leader.”

Either Breezy had a chat with his publicist, or he came up with that statement while in a particularly blissful state …

Brown would be wise to remain relaxed, as he’ll be spending the foreseeable future cleaning up highways and beaches, removing graffiti (which he happens to appreciate), and other unfortunate tasks supervised by L.A. County officials.

The singer was initially ordered to do community service after he pleaded guilty to assaulting Rihanna in 2009. Although he claimed he’d fulfilled his punishment in his native Virginia, the district attorney earlier this year accused Brown of lying about the work and submitting false community service records.

Here Comes The Saudi Dynasty Succession Crisis

The Saudi dynasty is facing its biggest dynastic challenge in 50 years, and Game of Thrones-style cracks are showing in the imminent transition  from King Abdullah’s rule.

Liz Sly of The Washington Post details  growing discontent in the royal family after the contentious appointment of the  king’s youngest brother, Muqrin, as the deputy heir.

The choice of Muqrin, a British-educated fighter pilot who has close ties to the U.S., is controversial partly because he is the  son of a Yemeni concubine who was never formally married to his father, King Abdulaziz Al-Saud,  who founded the Saudi state  in 1932.

“He is not a real prince; his mother was a slave and there are other brothers who are more competent,” a former Saudi official told Sly. “Nobody believes Muqrin can become king.”

The newly-created title effectively allows Muqrin, 69, to bypass at least two other brothers, which goes against the unspoken rule that succession passes down according to age.

King Abdullah is believed to be around 90 and his  immediate successor, Crown Prince Salman, is 79.  Both are in poor health.

Over the last six decades, the succession mostly passed brother to brother in order of their age. But the last of the current line of brothers will die soon, passing power to the third generation of the family.

Sly explains the problem that consequently arises:

“Given that there are scores of princes in [the third generation], the potential for discord is high. Whoever inherits the throne is likely to anoint his own brothers as future heirs, thereby cutting out multiple cousins from access to the throne and the patronage it provides.”

This chart from The Washington Institute lays out the line of succession up to this point (Murquin is one of the “19 other surviving sons”:

Alice from ‘The Brady Bunch’ dies

Ann B. Davis, best known as the ever-chipper live-in housekeeper Alice Nelson on the highly rated ABC series The Brady Bunch, has died in San Antonio, CNN reported. She was 88.

Davis, who earlier won two Emmy Awards for her role as the peppery secretary Schultzy on The Bob Cummings Show, died Sunday after a fall in her bathroom, CNN reported, adding that she hit her head and never regained consciousness.

The Brady Bunch, created by Sherwood Schwartz, originally aired from September 1969 to March 1974 on ABC, then spent a year in syndication, followed by several reunion films and spinoff series.

It’s the story of Mike Brady (Robert Reed), a widowed architect with three sons — Greg (Barry Williams), Peter (Christopher Knight), and Bobby (Mike Lookinland) — who marries Carol Ann Martin (Florence Henderson), who has three daughters: Marcia (Maureen McCormick), Jan (Eve Plumb) and Cindy (Susan Olsen).

Davis played the housekeeper Alice on the sitcom and occupied the center square of the checkerboard in the show’s opening.

Davis, who was an avid knitter, told People magazine in a 1992 interview that the cast “got along beautifully. … “I had the boys hooking rugs and the girls doing needlepoint.” She said in the story that in real life, “I basically don’t do that well with children.”

Facebook Is Worried The EU Will Gum Up Its $19 Billion WhatsApp Acquisition

Facebook is seeking an anti-trust review by the European Union over its $19bn acquisition of messaging service WhatsApp.

The social network has approached the European Commission, the EU’s executive arm which deals with anti-trust issues, to see if the body could help it avoid anti-trust reviews in multiple EU countries, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The request comes after European telecom companies put pressure on Facebook over the fact that WhatsApp would give the social network an unfair advantage in the instant messaging market in Europe.

The deal, which was announced in February, marks Facebook’s largest acquisition to date, leap frogging Instagram which was bought for around $1bn in 2012.

According to figures from eMarketer Facebook accounted for a 17.5 per cent share of worldwide mobile ad spend in 2013, up from a 5.4 per cent in 2012, with 20.8m mobile phone Facebook users in.
